March 10, 2020 – No Comparisons

Please, stop comparing the death rates between sicknesses. This is not a contest. What’s needed is for people to change their daily habits in the small ways that can slow/stop the spread of coronavirus: hand washing and social distancing, in particular. People’s health is in danger of being compromised and the most vulnerable among us are in danger of dying. For the common good, please take these actions. You may be healthy and strong, but someone you come in contact with may not be. We do not have a good understanding of how virulent coronavirus is, so we cannot say the infection spreads only to the next 5 or 10 or 100 people in the chain of contact We need to assume that exposure continues down the chain and respond accordingly.

Coronavirus was going to go away, like a miracle

February 28, 2020 – Looking for a Miracle

This is the day. This is the day that President Trump said he thought the coronavirus would just go away. It would be like a miracle. There are around 60 confirmed cases in the US. California iss monitoring around 8,400 people suspected of being infected. The world markets are tanking. Comparisons are being made to the hit the markets took in 2008. The White House says that all public health officials had to clear any TV appearances in advance. Reports are that President Trump was angry that health officials were contradicting his rosy assessment of the situation. This is the day when there seemed to be a shift in the world toward taking coronavirus and COVID-19 seriously. And toward hoping for that miracle.

The doctor is there to guide you in managing your health. But how much does it really matter if the doctor is pleased or not?
